October 2007

We went to Washington DC.  We reveled in family.  We visited the nucleus of modern democracy.  We attended feats of personal endurance.

We realized we are not smart enough to understand the complexities of public transportation.

These are our impressions…

Welcome to Washington, DC

an idyllic place where red shirts peacefully coexist with blue shirts.

And although it has a reputation for containing many of these…

it’s also a fantastical place filled with unicorns,

giant hairballs,

spooky castles,

and crazy, M. C. Escher-like worlds.

The people of DC are friendly…

contemplative

respectful

(ok, maybe not that respectful)…

and oddly attracted to UPS trucks.

They also like to get together and run 26 miles.  I think this has to do with their frustration with the public transit system, but it seems to be a rather excessive reaction.  I mean, we just took a cab.

I don’t know if this lady was in the marathon or if she just stole this flag from the Whitehouse.

I’d like to buy a vowel, Pat.

Tom apparently made friends with Strawberry Shortcake’s grandfather.

Represent’n!

Tom looking for a shortcut.

He looked good around mile 13…

…but by the end, the race had obviously taken its toll on Tom.

(actually, it looks like he could use a good rest.  Look no further for a place to stay in DC)

When you find yourself taking pictures of people taking pictures, it’s time to end.

The End.
